High Heat In New York
Posted on 30 April 2015
The New York Yankees are literally throwing high heat.
The team is hereby declared the official Tallboys sports team. With five pitchers over 6-foot-7, we know our next tee shirt order will likely come from the Bronx. Looks like we better get to working on pinstripes.
With an average height of 6-foot-2, pitchers that are almost half a foot taller have clear advantages. For one, the batter is probably scared as hell. Imagine staring into the eyes of Frankenstein (with a leather glove) every time you you step into the batter’s box.
In additional to the Frankenstein intimidation factor, the Yankees’ assistant general manager, Billy Eppler, suggests that tall pitchers offer other advantages too.
Eppler says that bigger sometimes equates to more durable. Bigger and more durable Sounds like a Tallboy tee. This Yankee/Tallboy marriage is sounding even more perfect than ever before!
Oh, and one more thing. Because the Yankees’ humongous hurlers have such long arms, they actually release the ball closer to the plate.
Faster pitches coming at you from a shorter distance. Help.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Adrian Bejan, the J.A. Jones professor of mechanical engineering at Duke University said, “The larger and taller machine is capable of hurling a large mass farther and faster.” Well, that sounds like a Tallboy win.
Bejan went on to note that the speediest pitches mostly come from the long fingers of tall pitchers. Another Tallboy win. We’re not actually keeping score, but it seems like tall is far in the lead.
We’re proud to know that if tee shirts don’t work out for us, we’ll just hang out in the Yankees bullpen.
Do you think tall pitchers are better than short pitchers? Let us know in the comment section below. Although we’re pretty hard to convince...
